Smith Westerns

Look no further than Chicago's own Smith Westerns for 2011's massively popular buzzing blog sweethearts. While others have failed to make the jump from a lo-fi introduction to studio polished debut (Black Kids), Smith Westerns combine the energy of 1970s guitar work with synthy-atmospherics and have transformed the lo-fi noise pop that gained them notoriety into shimmery summer diamonds of blue sky music. Look for Dye It Blonde to be on nearly every end of year best-of list. Check out their baby faces going acoustic below:

Adventureland Soundtrack

The other week I watched two movies: The Social Network and Adventureland. Really really liked them both, especially Adventureland. I'm typically a movie soundtrack fiend and will like just about any movie with a solid one. So, let me introduce you to the cherry on top of my recent Jesse Eisenberg love affair - the Adventureland soundtrack. Check out the complete list of 80's songs featured to perfectly paint the 1987 carnival backdrop here.

Vivian Girls - I Heard You Say

I liked Vivian Girls instantly. Their debut "Tell the World" was my formal introduction to the messy, haphazard neo-punk that arose out of the dregs of garage rock and boredom with a moody indie scene (see Black Lips, Harlem, The Strange Boys). On "I Heard You Say" Vivian Girls return with a tip from the beach rock that ruled the summer, but stay true to form with the monotone head nodding they're known for.

Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues

YES. This was an incredible week as Fleet Foxes released the title track from their long awaited, feverishly anticipated sophomore album. "Helplessness Blues" is classic Fleet Foxes picking up right where they left off and throwing in some new production techniques to keep things interesting. The album isn't due until March, but hopefully we will see another release before then. For now you can download the song by clicking the really cool album artwork above.
